1903 (17th July) 2d Hobart tied by Launceston cds on locally addressed cover with 'DETAINED FOR FUMIGATION" cachet. This was due to a serious outbreak of smallpox after a travelling performer had contracted the disease in India & visited Launceston. Mail was fumigated & had this h/s applied accordingly. The "Examiner" newspaper advised that all mail including newspapers would be fumigated for two hours before despatch. Minor blemishes with small tear at top. Lewellyn Tasmania receival cds on front. A rarely seen & fascinating cover. Purchased from Rex & Fair for $1850 with accompanying paperwork.
