France 1920 (7th May) Paris to Timaru, New Zealand endorsed "Par Avion – Paris: Londres" & bearing early black on salmon "Par Avion" vignette etiquette. Franked on both sides by 33 x 10c for aggregate 3f30c (overpaid 5c for 3f25 rate), 2f of which was attributed to the Paris-London airmail service surcharge. This then departed London on 19th May on the P&O Kyber arriving in Sydney early June from where it was transferred to steamer bound for New Zealand. This is the earliest commercial international airmail service item to Australasia. It is in fact of far greater philatelic significance than the August 1920 cover carried by Parer & McIntosh claimed to be the first "ordinary" airmail letter to Australia (from Straits Settlements) which was franked at 4c for surface rate only & not carried by an official airmail service yet still realised $14,375 at a Melbourne auction in 2011. Some wear as to be expected but a scarce cover full of character. An excellent opportunity to obtain a lovely exhibition item. Ex Perry (plate 5)
